Review: Broken Skies

Broken Skies (Broken Skies #1)Broken Skies by Theresa Kay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

**Received ARC from the author for an honest review**
I warn you I'm bad at reviews, but here goes nothing.

Beware of the book hangover that will last a lifetime. No words can describe my feelings for this book. Everything about this book will make you fall in love and fall into a pit of hate at once. I can't think of anything to say about this book without screeching 'IT'S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING' every few (coherent) words. I NEED the next book like I need food.

The book is about Jax,and her quest to find her twin brother Jace after he was kidnapped by the aliens that settled on Earth 10 years ago. She is determined to find and save her twin, even it it means teaming up with the unknown and beautiful alien. The story (mainly) follows Jax and Lir
as they travel back to the unknown city that holds her brother.
The pair begin an uneasy truce, which leads to friendship, and then flows into something more. Though the love story is an under current within the novel, not the reason for the story. The trust is built slowly and when their relationship is on the rocks, they seem to work it out (mostly).

The characters that Kay has written are not only entertaining and engaging, but real. The characters have flaws that make them human and all the more real. They don't have these 'half-flaws' (like arrogance hiding pain and the other overused, cliched flaws that are normally written about). The characters have flaws that only make them better.
Jax herself is so broken, yet strong and willful. She's not to be messed with and she falls apart. She isn't a 'three dimensional' character, she's an enigma of reality. She shows that people can break under simple things (her case when touched) but she shows that people can fix themselves with a little help. She needs other people to help her no matter how hostile she is to people in general. Jax embodies the broken mind of someone fighting to be whole again. She's a badass without meaning to be, and lives in extremes. Jax is a real character with real and confusing emotions.
All the other characters are well developed and thought through, from Emily to Stellan. I love how they were all written, and the relationships between different characters made the book even more enjoyable.
Lir is... Well he made me sad. He's so perfectly imperfect and him through Jax's eyes shows his, well his humanity. He may be an alien, but he has some very human characteristics. I can't wait for Fractured Suns so I can see how they handle everything.

All in all; a fantastic read, great story line, well written characters, and something that just leaves you wanting more
